2 Chronicles 5 Extended Summary

WHEN:

  • 2 Chronicles 4 discusses events that took place in the early years of Solomon’s reign, specifically from his 4th to 11th year as king.

  • Solomon was king for 40 years according to 1 Kings 11:42, from approximately 1015-975 B.C.

CHARACTERS:

  • Solomon – Son of David and the 3rd king of God’s people in the Promised Land.

  • Levitical Priests – Only certain priests were allowed to carry the Ark of the Covenant.

  • Singers – Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun, and their families oversaw the music at the Temple.

WHERE:

  • The capital of the Kingdom of Israel and Judah was Jerusalem.

  • The Temple was built in Jerusalem at the location where Araunah’s threshing floor once stood on Mount Moriah (2 Sam 24; 1 Chron 21:18; 2 Chron 3:1).

OUTLINE:

  • THE TEMPLE IS FINISHED AND THE ARK OF THE COVENANT IS PUT INSIDE (5:1-14):

    • Solomon finished the Temple and filled it with all the treasures he and his father had stored up in preceding years.

    • All the people assembled in Jerusalem to see the Ark of the Covenant brought into the Temple.

    • Solomon and the people offered so many sacrifices they couldn’t be counted.

    • For some time, the Ark had been kept in a special tent David created for it (2 Sam 6:17). The Levite priests took it from the tent and carried it into the Temple.

    • The Ark was put in the Most Holy Place, under the wings of the two golden Cherubim.

    • The Tabernacle, the original tent built by Moses in the wilderness, was also stored in the Temple.

    • When the Ark was in place, the Levite singers started singing as they were accompanied by 120 trumpeters and other instruments.

    • They sang, “For He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever” (5:13).

    • When God heard the song, a cloud filled the Temple, and “the glory of the Lord filled the house” (8:11).

APPLICATION:

  • I have the tendency to think in the short-term. I want to work on something and complete it in one day or one week. I want to see results quickly.

  • I imagine many of you are the same way.

  • But imagine what we could accomplish in the Kingdom of God if we thought long-term.

  • It took Solomon 7.5 years to build the Temple, not including the preliminary planning done by David.

  • It took a long time but, in the end, he was able to build something incredible.

  • Short term thinking doesn’t always bear the best fruit. Congregations and individual members should be thinking about long-term plans that can generate a better harvest.
