Isaiah Introduction - Bible Study
Date: Isaiah prophesied in the 8th and 7th Century BC, roughly 740-680 BC.
Isaiah was a prophet to Judah.
He prophesied during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, and Manasseh (Kings of Judah).
Isaiah’s preaching was a two-fold message of judgment and hope.
(1) JUDGEMENT:
He warned the people of Judah that God would punish them for their wickedness if they did not repent and start following God’s commands.
Isaiah prophesied that God would use the Assyrian Empire and the Babylonian Empire to bring about this punishment on his people.
God was going to destroy and purify old Jerusalem because it was filled with sin, fake devotion to God, and injustice.
This was God’s message of judgement delivered through Isaiah.
(2) HOPE:
Next, we look at God’s promises of hope.
In the place of old Jerusalem, God was going to establish a new city, one where justice was upheld and the law of God was respected.
Out of the people of Judah, God would save a remnant, and this remnant would be ruled by a great king.
This king would be a messianic figure, a savior of the nation, and he would establish righteousness amongst God’s people.
The king would also be highly unique, in that he was a king and a servant, a servant to the people of God, and His sacrifice would cleanse the sins of the nation.
