Isaiah 62 - Bible Study in 5 Minutes

Isaiah 62 Short Summary:

This chapter continues the prophetic theme observed in Isaiah 60 and 61, the future restoration of Judah by the Lord’s grace. God was going to make Zion a light of salvation to the world. Isaiah told the people to rejoice in Jerusalem, rebuild its ruins, and look to the horizon for the glorious coming of the Lord.

Isaiah 62 Bible Study

TIMELINE:

  • The prophetic ministry of Isaiah spanned the reigns of King Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah.

  • Isaiah’s ministry is thought to span from 739-681 BC.

KEY CHARACTERS:

  • Isaiah – The son of Amoz (1:1). God commissioned Isaiah as His prophet to Judah.

  • The People of Judah – God foretells the restoration of Judah through the work of His Messiah.

DEFINITIONS:

  • Diadem (62:3) - A crown or headband, usually with jewels, worn by monarchs.

OUTLINE:

  • THE COMING SALVATION OF JUDAH (62:1-12):

    • This chapter continues the prophesy concerning God’s gracious future restoration of Judah.

    • As we’ve discussed, many of these prophesies were fulfilled through the work of the Messiah (Jesus) and His Church.

    • One day, righteousness and salvation would shine from Judah like a burning torch.

    • All the nations would look to them and call them by a “new name that the mouth of the Lord will give” (62:2).

    • Instead of a forsaken wife, Judah would be a crown of beauty and royal diadem in God’s hand.

    • God would rejoice over Judah like a groom rejoices over his bride.

    • God would set watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem, and their enemies would never again have the upper hand against them.

    • Isaiah told the people to enter the gates of Jerusalem, clear the roads, build up the ruins, and lift up a banner, because God was bringing salvation to the city.

    • Isaiah prophesied of Judah, “they shall be called The Holy People, The Redeemed of the Lord; and you shall be called Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken” (62:12).

APPLICATION:

  • Sadly, some people look back at their lives and realize they’ve failed their children, grandchildren, and those who will live in future generations.

  • The people of Isaiah’s day failed their posterity and their nation.

  • Many parents in the Church look back at the way they raised their children and regret not leading them more closely to the Lord.

  • Many leaders in the Church realize too late they’ve failed to train leaders for their grandchildren’s generation.

  • Many women wish they had modelled godliness more perfectly to their daughters who are infatuated with worldly things.

  • Some look back and intensely regret sins that destroyed their families and muted their influence.

  • Those regrets should stir deep repentance in us, but chapters like Isaiah 60-62 offer us some hope in those remorseful situations.

  • God can take care of future generations, blessing them, restoring them, breathing spiritual life into them, even when their parents and grandparents failed to lead them spiritually.

  • If you’re tormented by the regret of failing someone you love, ask God to step into that situation and pour out a blessing the one you failed. If future generations deeply desire God, your failings will not stop God from giving grace to your children to make up for where you failed.

  • You may fail as an earthly father (mother, grandfather, sibling, or elder), but the Father of all creation will guide those who diligently seek Him and be a father to the fatherless.
