MATTHEW 22 SUMMARY IN 5 MINUTES
- WHEN: - The birth of Jesus probably occurred around 4 B.C..
- From Luke 3:23, we know Jesus began His ministry when He was about 30 years old.
- This would place the events of Jesus’ ministry roughly between 26-31 A.D..

- CHARACTERS: - Jesus - The Messiah. The Son of God.
- Disciples - Jesus’ followers and students.
- Herodians, Pharisees, and Sadducees - Attempted to trap Jesus in His words.
- David - The second king of Israel. He was a highly respected figure in Jewish history. Jesus mentioned him in verses 41-46.

- WHERE: - All of the events of chapter 22 occurred in Jerusalem the week leading up to Jesus’ death on the cross.

- OUTLINE: - THE PARABLE OF THE WEDDING FEAST (22:1-22:14): - The Kingdom of God could be compared to a king who prepared a feast.
- When everything was ready, the invitees were summoned to the feast, but they refused to come and abused the servants who invited them.
- The king who had prepared the feast was angry and told his servants to call people from the street to enjoy his feast.
- One of the guests didn’t have on a wedding garment.
- When asked why, the man offered no explanation.
- The king commanded him to be cast out into outer darkness.
- “For many are called, but few are chosen.”

- SHOULD WE PAY TAXES? (22:15-22:22): - The Pharisees sent their disciples to Jesus to entrap Him in His words.
- They asked if they ought to pay taxes to Caesar.
- Jesus asked for a coin with Caesar’s face on it.
- He told them, “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.

- TRICK QUESTION - SEVEN HUSBANDS AND THE RESURRECTION (22:23-22:33): - The Sadducees tried to trick Jesus with a question about the resurrection.
- They asked, ”If a woman had seven husbands and they all died before her, who’s wife would she be in the afterlife?”
- Jesus told them their question was foolish because the marriage relationship won‘t exist in Heaven.

- THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT (22:34-22:40): - A lawyer asked Jesus, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment?”
- Jesus responded, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
- The second greatest command: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

- WHY DID DAVID CALL THE CHRIST “LORD”? (22:41-22:46): - In response to the Pharisees’ questioning, Jesus asked them a question.
- He asked them why David called the Christ “Lord” if He was his son?
- The Pharisees were stumped and didn’t know how to answer.

- BIG PICTURE: - Like the invitees at the wedding feast, the Jewish people were being invited into the Kingdom of God, but they were rejecting God’s invitation.
- Because of their stubbornness, God would eventually call others (Gentiles), to become a part of His kingdom.

- APPLICATION: - The Jewish leaders didn’t ask questions to learn, they asked questions to accuse.
- It takes humility to ask questions correctly.
- Jesus welcomed honest questions from those seeking to know Him better.
- Evaluate your own heart, do you have the humility to admit you don’t know everything and to ask honest questions?
