Song of Solomon 7 Bible Study

AUTHOR:

  • Solomon, the son of David, wrote the Song of Songs (1:1).

  • He is a fitting author, especially considering 1 Kings 4:32 tells us he wrote 1,005 songs.

  • Solomon is named in multiple locations within the song.

KEY CHARACTERS:

  • The Young Woman – A beautiful Shulamite woman who is the object of the young man’s affections.

  • The Young Man – A handsome young man, Solomon, who is the object of the young woman’s affections.

  • Daughters of Jerusalem – These women interject supplementary comments into the dialog between the young man and woman.

DEFINITIONS:

  • Tresses (7:5) – Loose braids or flowing curls of hair.

  • Carmel (7:5) – A mountain in Northwest Israel on near the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

  • Mandrakes (7:13) – A plant used for fertility and as an aphrodisiac.

OUTLINE:

  • SOLOMON’S DESIRE FOR THE “DELIGHTS” OF HIS BRIDE (7:1-9a):

    • Solomon continues complimenting his bride, starting with her feet and moving up her body.

    • Her feet were beautiful and her thighs round like jewels.

    • Her navel like a bowl full of wine, and her stomach like a heap of wheat encircled with lilies.

    • Her breasts like two fawns, twins of a gazelle.

    • Her neck like an ivory tower, her eyes like pools of water, and her nose like a tower in Lebanon.

    • Her head like the peak of a mountain crowning her majesty, and her hair like purple, beautiful enough to capture a king’s attention.

    • Solomon continued with even more intimate compliments. He said she was like a palm tree and her breasts like its clusters of fruit. He said he would climb the tree and taste the fruit. He looked forward to making love to her because her breath was like sweet apples and her mouth was like the best wine (Pro 5:19).

  • THE BRIDE GIVES SOLOMON HER LOVE (7:9b-13):

    • After having been complimented so thoroughly, Solomon’s lover was eager to give Solomon the fruit he enjoyed so much.

    • She encouraged him by telling him the things he would taste would go down smoothly for him.

    • She said, “I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me” (7:10).

    • She invited him to go to the vineyard with her, to see whether the fruit was in bloom (6:11-12), and to satisfy the desire that had blossomed in them both.

    • At their vineyard getaway she had fruits, both old and new, for him to taste.

APPLICATION

  • Notice that the young woman relishes in the fact that her husband’s desire is for her.

  • Wives want to feel like the object of the desire of their husbands, and when they do, this kind of mutually satisfying intimacy and generous sexuality blossoms.

  • The woman is made to feel beautiful, desirable, and longed for, which arouses her love and makes her eager to please the one who makes her feel that way.

  • What keeps this from happening?

  • Often men don’t admire their wives and compliment their wives the way Solomon did.

  • Unfortunately, some men are better at admiring other women than their wives, and wives aren’t ignorant to it. Men, do you think your wife catching you staring at another woman in the grocery store makes her feel like an object of desire?

  • Three times in this book, Solomon sits back and admires his wife. He looks at her from head to toe and delights in what he sees, and then he tells her what he enjoys so much about her. He articulates his admiration of her and his appetite for her.

  • Husbands, if you look at your wife that way and talk to your wife that way, she’ll relish in the fact that she is the object of your attention above all other women, the mutual satisfaction of intimacy will be greater, and your marriage will be more secure and enjoyable because of it.
